Perry Pears

‘Red Pear’

Also called ‘Aylton Red’.

Thought to be a Herefordshire variety known for around 400 years.

Makes a vintage quality Perry.

Status: Not endangered.


‘New Meadow’

Originated in Ledbury, Herefordshire.

Status: Thought to be ‘Critical’ meaning only around 10 sites remain.


‘Green Horse’

From North and West Gloucestershire.

Very large.

Status: Endangered.


‘Butt’

Thought to have originated in Norton.

One of the few pears that doesn’t rot down quickly, which can be handy.

Status: Not endangered.


‘Blakeney Red’

The most widespread perry pear. Makes a soft and juicy perry.

Status: Not endangered.


‘Brandy’

Thought to have originated in the Forest of Dean in the 19th century.

Status: Not endangered.

‘Boy Pear’

A very heavy cropping perry pear. Inedible fruit and a strong perry. Known from Ross-on-Wye..

Status: Not endangered.
